Sox add utility man, Herrera, in trade with Rockies

The Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox announced a trade between the two on December the 18th.
The Rockies have traded utility man, Jonathan Herrera to the Red Sox for LHP Franklin Morales and RHP Chris Martin.

Jonathan Herrera
Adding switch-hitter Jonathan Herrera gives the Sox some depth in the infield that they were lacking so far in the off season. If the Sox can't re-sign short stop, Stephen Drew, they will have that feeling of a good utility man to back up young guys: Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts.

In 2013, Herrera hit .292 with 1 home run and 16 runs batted in while only appearing at the plate 215 times. Herrera spent some time at short stop(42 games), second base(22 games), third base(5 games) and left field(2 games) last season. The Red Sox will be Herrera's second team.

The Red Sox have lefties Andrew Miller, Craig Breslow and Drake Britton whom are all expected to play a significant role in their bullpen.

The addition of lefty, Franklin Morales, will give the Rockies some lefty depth out of the bullpen or even as a starter. The Rockies added LHP Boone Logan earlier in the off season to really be their lefty specialist out of the pen in 2014. Morales was with the Rockies from 2007-part of 2011; so this will be his second stint with the Rockies.

In 2013, Morales 2-2 with a 4.62 ERA. Morales walked a wooping 15 batters in 25.1 innings pitched. The struggles to find the plate were not the only damper on Morales's season.

Morales missed signlificant time with a strained left pectoral(occured on 6/22/13) and a strained lower back(occured on 3/22/13).

Franklin Morales
Martin, 27, split time AA Portland and AAA Pawtucket. In Portland Martin went 2-0 with 3 saves and had 21 scoreless innings. In Pawtucket, Martin went 3-3 with 3 saves and a 3.10 ERA. Martin is a strikeout machine, he struck out 47 in 51 innings for the Paw Sox.
