Late yesterday, the
Arizona Diamondbacks were back at it again and made their re-signing of
Eric Chavez official.
Chavez, 36, might not be the guy that hit 29 home runs with a .397 OBP with Gold Glove defense at third base anymore but he is certainly a valuable asset to any team. In 80 games in the 2013 season he still managed to clip 9 home runs with a .332 OBP and a .478 slugging percentage with an outstanding .993 fielding percentage at third base over a small sample size of playing time and he even logged playing time at first base.

With the addition of
Mark Trumbo, Chavez' playing time will likely decline as he can play first and third as well as the outfield despite the fact that Chavez gets on base much more often than Trumbo. So I would expect that Eric Chavez will primarily be used as a pinch hitter since he is getting up there in age and at 36 years old, it is uncertain how many more years he can play for. Despite all this, signing Chavez was a smart move by the Diamondbacks and they have been having a great off season and do not expect them to cool down any time soon.
Chavez is a six-time Gold Glove Award winner(2001,2002,2003,2004,2005,2006) and a one-time Silver Slugger Award Winner(2002). Arizona is Eric's third major league team.
