Marlins and Jones finalize two-year deal

Garrett Jones

Garrett Jones and the Miami Marlins have finalized their deal together; Jones will get two years and $7.75 million from Miami. Jones will make $2.75 million in 2014 and $5 million in 2015. The deal was agreed to late last week but couldn't be passed because Jones still needed to pass his physical.

Jones hit .233 last season for the Pittsburg Pirates while belting 15 home runs and driving in 51. Jones posted a .992 fielding percentage at first base last season, only playing 83 games there. Jones played in right field for 32 games last season only committing 1 error.

Jones will add some nice power to the Marlins lineup. Last season, Marlins first baseman hit 10 home runs and posted a .344 slugging percentage, both ranking last in the majors. Earlier in the offseason the Fish signer catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to three-year, $21 million dollar deal and infielder Rafael Furcal to a one-year, $3 million dollar deal.

In 2013, the Marlins lineup was dreadful; ranking last in the MLB in runs, home runs, batting average, slugging percentage and on base percentage.

The Marlins should be a little cautious of spending. During the 2011 offseason the Fish spent big. Miami inked SS Jose Reyes to a six-year, $106 million dollar contract. Miami also signed SP Mark Buehrle to a four-year, $58 million dollar contract. Miami tried to bolster their pen by signing CP Heath Bell to a three-year, $27 million dollar contract. The Marlins also in the same offseason traded for SP Carlos Zambrano and $15.45 million dollars. The moves were all for nothing, as the Marlins ended up shipping Reyes, Buehrle and staff-ace, Josh Johnson, to the Toronto Blue Jays following a horrendous 67-win 2012 season.
